This will apply particularly for drastic changes, for example if you like to wear pink and colourful clothes and feel like changing to a Goth sort of style. This is an example, but any style change makes parents a little uncomfortable, specially because of the money it will take for you to dress like you want to.
STEPS
1. Inform yourself . Before doing anything, you must inform yourself on the style you want to change into. Do you want to be an emo? Goth? Punk? Or even a surfist? Usually these styles have a philosophy and History behind it: learn those. You don' t want to seem to be something you are not. Use the Internet!
2. Start searching for stores . Even if your parents are liberal, it is never a pleasant idea for them to know that they will have to spend lots of money for you to buy a whole new closet, "just because you feel like". So what you must do is forget the expensive online stores, and ludicrous prices, and start searching for what you want, for a cheaper price. If your parents bring up the money issue, you will know what to answer - because you already searched for the cheaper stores and know where to
get things. They will appreciate your responsibility and concern about that fact.
3. Be smooth . Why should you change in a drastic way?! Don't change make up, clothes, haircut, accessories all in one week or month. Play it calm - first start by getting different accessories, then the clothes (for example, if you're going to be Emo, why not start by a darker t- shirt, or tight black pants instead of cutting your hair and changing your make up all together?!) and after "the field is studied" then you start getting into it.
4. If you take one step at a time, people will certainly begin to get used to the change. If you do it fast, people will most certainly call you a poser.
5. Talk to your parents ! But do it after you've changed 1 or 2 things in your closet: after you've started wearing different accessories, and buying different t- shirts or sweaters. But nothing too different. Just a subtle change. Then, when you're ready to get into the real thing, talk to your parents - but ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS remember: do NOT yell, always keep calm, even if they say "no" at first. You must present your arguments correctly, show how mature you can be, tell them this would
really make you happy and you hope they understand. Also, make sure you let them know about the "I' ve searched for cheap stores" thing.
